It’s time for Amsterdam, Ibiza and Rio de Janerio to move. There is a new party capital making a name for itself. Once a quiet surfer town in southern Bali, Canggu is fast becoming the party capital of Asia…and the world.
Canggu is on the south coast of Bali in Indonesia, west of Kuta, Seminyak and Legian. They have each become world famous party destinations in their own right over the past 25 years.
Canggu has grown rapidly over the past decade, leading to the development of luxury beach clubs, lavish yet affordable accommodations and unmissable nightlife.

Best Beach Clubs in Canggu
Canggu’s party scene is perhaps best known for its beach clubs. All these elements have played a huge role in the development of the region.
Finns Beach Club is widely considered Bali’s best beach club, offering guests a choice of four pools, eight bars (including two swim-up bars!), and five different restaurants. The venue hosts live DJ sets daily and is right on Berawa Beach. Take your seat for the spectacular sunset and when the sky darkens, it’s time to turn up the music and party the night away.
The Atlas Beach Club only opened in July 2022 and is already establishing itself as the best one-stop entertainment venue in Bal. Now Bali’s largest beach club (with aspirations of being Asia’s largest beach club), the venue does everything to ensure guests have a great time. Home to world-class DJs and also offering access to Berawa Beach, Atlas Beach Club is another go-to party spot.

Party, live and work in Canggu
Canggu manages to balance a hardcore party scene with health, wellness, and sports vibes. There are countless gyms, surf schools and spas allowing travelers to maintain the party lifestyle without compromising their health. Famous for surfing, the beachfront village now hosts MMA fighters, yogis, skaters and CrossFit junkies. Canggu has long been a favorite destination for influencers and travel bloggers. It now has a thriving community of digital entrepreneurs.
Known affectionately as ‘The ‘Gu’ by long-term international residents, has universal appeal. There is an increasingly global community in the area, with many Australians, Americans and Europeans making this place their new home. In fact, officials in Bali are working hard to make it easier for digital nomads to settle.
There are two ways for travelers to stay in Canggu. One option is the 30-day tourist visa on arrival, open to citizens of 75 countries, including the United States. The visa costs 500,000 IDR (33 USD) and is valid for 30 days, it can be extended once for another 30 days.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism has announced that digital nomads can live in the best digital nomad cities in Bali, such as Canggu, with the B211a socio-cultural visa. This is valid for 60 or 180 days and can be processed online. The 180-day visa costs IDR 6,000,000 (USD 400) and takes 4 days to process once the relevant documents have been submitted.
Instagram vs. Reality of partying in paradise
Canggu is a popular destination, but the area has been in the news lately. Not everyone is thrilled with the region’s new status as the party capital. Understandably, locals and longtime international residents are concerned about how the party scene is affecting the area’s reputation.
Just 10 years ago, Canggu was a rural, coastal village rarely hosting a few thousand surfers and travelers seeking to escape the busier beaches of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. Now the development is booming. Agricultural landscapes have turned into guesthouses and hotel complexes. Roads originally built for a few local moped users now compete with full-fledged rush-hour traffic jams.
However, that’s not bad news; steps are being taken to ensure that Canggu can sustain its development. Local senators have raised concerns about road infrastructure with the provincial government. Officials said they would review development budgets next year. It is hoped that the funds will be disrupted to upgrade infrastructure for the benefit of the local community and the tourism industry.
A petition went viral in early September as local residents complained about noise from major venues exceeding 90 decibels. Local authorities took quick action. They will coordinate with all venues to ensure noise levels remain below 70 decibels. A solution why hope will mean that the party scene does not clash with local residents and other vacationers in the area.
There is no doubt that Canggu’s party scene is getting better and better. Possibly the world’s best-kept secret party destination, the area is no longer low-key! Once known only to the experienced few, Canggu should tops every party-oriented traveler’s list from now on !
