Book your flights now to take advantage of the best holiday travel deals

Richmond, Virginia. (WRIC) — As temperatures begin to cool, it’s a reminder that the holidays are right around the corner. If you want to fly to see your family this year, you may need to act fast.

Once you start looking for flights, experts say you’ll encounter good news and bad news. The good news is that flights are cheaper now than they were this summer. But the bad news is that overall flights are still more expensive than they were last year.

Travel expert Pauline Frommer says you should start planning now.

“The best time to book for Thanksgiving was about a month ago. So if you’re waiting, stop waiting. You need to book now,” Frommer said. are so much more expensive is that all the airlines have cut their schedules to try to avoid some of the chaos we’ve seen over the past two months.”

This year we have already seen widespread cancellations and delays. To help avoid this, Frommer says you should fly early in the morning – the earlier the better.

“Why? Because you know that plane and crew spent the night at your airport,” Frommer explained. “So it doesn’t have to come from another airport. There’s a lot less uncertainty as to whether it will work or not.

Frommer also pointed to a study that found you could potentially save money on tickets if you buy them on a Sunday, regardless of what day of the week you fly.

“When you book on Sundays, you save 10% on average on domestic flights,” Frommer said. “Now why is that? They don’t say because they’re just looking at models. I guess it’s because business travel agents don’t work on Sundays.

When booking your flights, also pay attention to the time you will have at the airport. Morgan Dean with AAA says you should consider layovers when planning your flights.

“You really want to plan that two-hour layover to give yourself that buffer in case your flight is a little late,” Dean said.

There are other considerations to keep in mind before setting off on a big trip. For example, experts say you should consider travel insurance for major trips like cruises.

Also think about where you want to go. If you might be thinking of leaving the country during the holiday season, now might be a good time to go. With the euro at par with the dollar, this is one of the most affordable opportunities in years to visit Europe.

But ultimately, if you see a great vacation deal, grab it! Because he may not be here tomorrow.
