- During the summer months, private vehicles can travel the first 15 miles of Denali Park Road to Savage River – it’s a great opportunity to see some of the Alaska Range’s varied landscapes and take photos of Denali (and wildlife!)

- Denali National Park is not closed in the winter, although the Denali Park Road usually closes due to winter weather conditions. Outdoor recreation, sightseeing, winter visitor center and indoor picnic area are just a few of the amazing ways to explore Denali for those willing to brave the freezing temperatures (Winter is also the perfect time to see the Northern Lights!)
Things to do in Denali

Although a multi-day trip is recommended to experience the best sights and scenery in the six million acre park; it’s possible to see some of Denali’s iconic sights in a single visit, whether it’s by car to Savage River; a bus tour; or a hike on one of the park’s hiking trails.

The following activities are ideal for travelers looking to spend anywhere from a few hours to a full day in Denali.

- Stop in the Denali Visitor Center to learn more about the park, take a hike, or participate in a ranger-led activity
- Go on a hike from the Savage River– many trails near the visitor center are less than two miles long
- There are many photo ops along Denali Park Road that are accessible by private vehicle (up to mile 15) – there are many places to stop, but parking at Mountain view (mile 12), offers particularly good mountain views on a clear day
- Cycle along Denali Park Road; visitors are welcome to cycle the entire 92-mile route, including campground loops and the designated roadside bike path (e-bikes are also permitted)
- Visit a Denali sled dog at the kennel – meet the dogs, learn about their important role in the park and their place in the history of the park. 2022 is the kennel’s centenary celebration, so many events are planned throughout the year The kennels are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Spring and summer 2022 schedules are yet to be determined

- Hike one of the longest trails like the Three Lakes Trail longest in Denali) which is a 9.5 mile one-way hike with spectacular lake views; or the wild alpine traila steep and strenuous trail with incredible mountain scenery
- Experience a true Denali adventure with a Guided tour of the glaciers of the Alaska Range and explore the unique beauty of some of the state’s most incredible glaciers for yourself. Many excursions are available by land, air or sea.
- Take one travel backpack and explore – Denali has only a handful of trails, so off-trail hiking is a great way to see and experience the park (reservations are required)
- Winter is still full of fun activities in Denali, including winter trails where visitors can snowshoe, ski, or hike; observe the aurora borealis; the hard way with winter camping at Riley Creek Campground; or book an excursion with a sled dog team
