Tatler Travel Guide 2022 is here: discover the winners now
“If we want to make reality bearable, we must all nurture a fantasy or two”, Marcel Proust said so wisely; and I have experienced many fantasies over the past year, from deepening my spiritual life on a holy Welsh island – an alluring and truly magical destination – to lying by the pool at the Cape Town hotel – Eden-Roc, nibble on a sensational club sandwich. Sybaritic as well as spiritual. (But, hey, who’s judging?)
Then there was that no longer ultra fancy and Tatler Hotel of the year, Castello di Reschio. It was a true utopia where in August I just wanted to enjoy life: riding, picking wildflowers and watching shooting stars during the feast of San Lorenzo weekend.
But all the hotels celebrated this year Tatler Travel guide – and these are the best in the world – have something elusive: the tranquility, a feeling of authenticity, a space to breathe, the thrill of novelty or the joyful nostalgia that accompanies revisiting the places you know and love, like Claridge’s, a realm of glamor that can be felt in IRL or from afar.
And let’s not forget the hoteliers who try to do good. Because at the end of the day, the greatest luxury a traveler can experience is to stay in one of those environmentally and socially-friendly places that allow guests to make a difference in the lives of those they visit (like Nomad’s Chada Katavi camp, another of our prize-winners). This year, more than ever, Tatler wants to shine a light on sustainable stars and those at the forefront of conservation.
Last year was for dreaming, this year is for doing. Times are uncertain but, armed with good advice, we can keep our sense of adventure and live it a little longer. Have a good trip!
